The New Mexico State Democratic Party has officially apologized for being woefully under-prepared for the high turnout at yesterday’s primary. Read for more info.
New Mexico is still counting votes from Super Tuesday, making them the last state to report results.
People on the ground at polling sites in Santa Fe, NM have described the system as ill-equipt to deal with the record numbers of people flocking to the polls.
Ana June of Santa Fe, NM reported that her polling location ran out of ballots hours before the polls closed, so caucus leaders simply Xeroxed a bunch more.“They used up all the copy paper in the school,” said June.
Lally O’mara-McMahon, also of Santa Fe, said she and her sister braved a blizzard to get out and cast their votes for Obama.
McMahon voted at the local fire station where, despite expecting a record turnout and having “extra” ballots on hand, they still ran out just after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.
“We waited while they went to get more ballots,” said McMahon, “the guy came back with more about an hour later.”
She said the local news reported people still voting at some polling locations until 9:30 last night, due to a rule that all people who are in line when the polls close can still vote.
“The lines were long, and it was a blizzard,” McMahon said, “But Obama is worth it.”
There are still three precincts, one in Sandoval County and two in Rio Arriba County that have not reported because, apparently, no one can reach the precinct leaders.
“I love it that we are the only state that is not done counting yet, but that’s how we roll in NM.” said McMahon.
