Listserv activism

Contacting the local Barack Obama campaign has been no problem here in Seattle.  Obama supporters and organizers are so large in numbers that when you contact them, three people contact you back.

The grassroots organization here is impressive in size and includes a group of University of Washington students working in the 43rd legislative district. There are 142 members of “University of Washington for Obama.”Dan Adams, a University of Washington student said, “If there’s demand, I’ll make multiple trips.”  He is planning on being a chauffeur for people who are unable to get to their caucus site on Saturday, sacrificing his precious gas money. Adams advertised this on the Obama listserv through the University of Washington, a communication device members of the 43rd legislative district are using to communicate ideas and plans for February 9th.  Members have been communicating almost daily via email for more than a month.

One day before the big day, the emails have changed tone and now all are sharing their ideas for things to say at the caucus.  Students are sending drafts to each other and waiting for feedback and new ideas so they can be as convincing as possible.  Members of “University of Washington for Obama” say it’s best to stay positive about Obama and not focus on Clinton.

“Focus on pro-Obama positivity and reduce anti-Hillary negativity.”  Said James Olney, giving his best advice for the drafts coming in.  The group is still working out some of the kinks in their speeches before they plan to give them at the caucus on Saturday.

Member Daewoo Kim is just working on keeping his speech upbeat.  Many of the group members are already nervous but if you ask them, they are expecting it to be a landslide victory in Obama’s favor.
