I was wrong. There are well over 500 people at today’s caucus, nearly three times the turnout of 2004. One man just walked by yelling, “We need more sign up sheets! There are 80 people in my precinct!”
One of the most surprising things is the number of younger voters. Brian Hitchner, 17, and his classmate Tessa Roberts, 18, encouraged their family to come caucus today. Roberts said her entire jazz choir at Issaquah High School went to the Obama rally last night. At their school, politics is a “big deal.”
“We’re not in a good place right now,” Roberts said. “We need a good, hard steer in the other direction.”
I just got word that at one of the precincts Hillary received only 20 percent of the vote. They are tallying numbers now. I’ve only been in touch with a few Hillary supporters today and one of them, Amanda Rogers recognizes the prominence of the Obama camp.
“There are so many Obama buttons and T-shirts,” Rogers said. “It’s not looking good.”
Devon and I are spreading ourselves around the caucus to get more tallies. This is the first round of caucusing and we expect a change in numbers to happen later- but not by much.
