Idaho vs. Washington

I attended the Magnolia caucus this afternoon, at Catherine Blaine Elementary School. I also went to the Idaho caucus in Kootenai County last week and the differences were many.In Idaho, the process works differently than in Washington. When people arrive at the caucus in Idaho, they simply separate into their support groups. Last week the groups were this: Obama, Clinton, Edwards and undecided. In order for any candidate to receive delegates, he, or she, must reach a 15% threshold of supporters. At the Kootenai County caucus, the voters were left with Obama and Clinton after all had been counted, with a majority going to Obama. Here is a picture from the Idaho caucus. You can see that everyone knows where they’re supposed to be. In Washington, the day played out much differently. The caucus took place at Catherine Blaine Elementary School and within the school people were divided up by their precincts. People were separated into different rooms within the school, each room holding several precincts within. Confusing? That’s an understatement.People were very confused throughout the whole night. Several people even came up to myself and others in the press and asked us if we could help direct them to their precinct. Here is a picture of the before and after of the Magnolia caucus. The simplicity of the Idaho caucus seemed to make things run smother, and proved less confusing for the caucus goers, and made more sense to me as well. But things still got done at the Magnolia caucus, with over 1,000 people in attendance. The numbers were not announced in any way, as of yet, because of the division within the precincts, but looking at the crowd, it seemed that Obama came away with more delegates than Clinton.
