Clinton: Meet me in Texas, make that Ohio

9:41 pm February 23rd, 2008 by UWDomke · 3 Comments

Last week Hillary Clinton challenged Barack Obama to “meet me in Texas.” He did, and they had a debate at the University of Texas at Austin on Thursday.  The debate ended on a notable positive note for Clinton — nice words about Obama, the American public, and a standing ovation from the audience. It appears, though, that Clinton’s Texas message might have been just that: a Texas message. An OfftheBus report on huffingtonpost said this:

“It’s far from over for Hillary Clinton in Texas — no matter what the polls and ‘the momentum’ suggest. The most important factor here is the desire on the part of Texas Dems for unity. At last, after so many years of Republican dominance in the state, they have a chance to Turn Texas Blue, and they’re afraid that if Clinton and Obama divide the party nationally such a rift will ruin their chances. The Texas Democratic Party is drawing in large numbers of new recruits; the desire to keep them is palpable.”

With this in mind, Clinton made nice in Texas.

On Saturday in Ohio, however, things took a hard turn. Different state, different message by Clinton. Same challenge, though.

Clinton was visibly angry Saturday, calling out Obama over a mailer his campaign sent out that criticized Clinton’s health care plan. She said, “Shame on you Barack Obama.” At the end she said, “Meet me in Ohio.” He will: the two are scheduled for a debate in Cleveland on Tuesday night.  I’m doubting she’ll be saying nice things this time around. Here’s the video clip of Clinton’s callout:

I wrote about Clinton’s finish to the Texas debate here, if you’re interested: http://adsoofmelk.wordpress.com/2008/02/23/50/

Unfortunately, I think this anger from Hillary is nothing but counterproductive. At least to me, it comes out as strident and shrill, brittle and carping. Truly, even though I prefer Obama, I don’t want to see Hillary’s dignity do a Hindenburg, KWIM?

It is not as though the folks in Ohio are the only ones that saw the newly irrate Hillary, and that those same folks in Ohio did not watch the debate in Texas. The two states are voting the same day. The swift change in tone was so bizarre, that it will likely be interpreted as tactical. IMHO, it was unwise to extinguish the good will she seemed to show in the Texas debate with a temper tantrum in Ohio. We shall see how it plays out.
