Ohio Goes Hillary

Hillary

After all the speculation, which will quickly re-commence for November’s general election, Ohio you picked a clear winner or so the mainstream media outlets report. According to the 81 percent completed tally at about 9:30 P.M. Pacific according to Talking Points Memo, Sen. Hillary Clinton appears to have won the Ohio primary with 56 percent to Sen. Barack Obama’s 42 percent.

If there was a spread tonight, Hillary would have smoked it.

Sen. Clinton picked up some key voter’s in her Ohio win, such as the industrious blue-collar voters, primarily in the states Northeast, a Democratic must win area and the elderly, two demographics that have been the key to her campaign.

“…surveys of voters as they left their polling places in Ohio indicated that Clinton held onto her robust support from groups that have been the foundation of her candidacy, taking strong margins among white, blue-collar and older voters.” –MSNBC

Like an earlier prediction, Ohioans came out in droves to vote. Ballot shortages forced the polls in Cuyahoga County to remain open until 9 P.M. Eastern and students showed up in large numbers to vote on the campus of The Ohio State University.

“Franklin County elections officials said they ran short on provisional ballots at a polling place on the Ohio State University campus because so many students showed up to vote.” –The Columbus Dispatch

Although she picked up Ohio, Rhode Island, and possibly Texas, Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall has some thoughts on her road to the nomination.

“In a day or two, I think those delegate numbers are going to sink in. And her path to the nomination still looks incredibly difficult. But give her her due.” –Talking Points Memo

My inner-Obama supporter still believes there is some hope for the Illinois Senator in Ohio, and apparently his campaign is still banking on the miracle of provisional ballots.

“Obama campaign aides are arguing that media folks should keep in mind that the provisional ballots come in later, and that since those ballots come from African American areas, such as Cleveland, the earlier totals are likely to favor Hillary.” –Talking Points Memo

These very provisional ballots helped turn the tide in Missouri where Sen. Obama came back to win, when the media had initially called a Clinton victory.

Although I find it hard to believe that provisional ballots will make up the large difference in the polls, there is one thing you can count on, the unpredictability of Ohio.
