With less than 24 hours before the Texas primary, the Students for Obama office on the UT campus was buzzing with volunteers and phone bankers.
Young adults crouched over laptops and people of all ages talked on cell phones and rolled posters. Warhol-esque Obama posters plastered the walls and Secret Service agents stomped on the stage checking safety for guest speaker Michelle Obama.
Dell Ann Dyer and her husband, Gary Miller, came all the way from Vancouver, WA to lend a hand to Obama’s campaign. Dyer and Miller sat on a couch at the far end of the room phone banking on their cell phones.
Miller recently switched his support from Clinton to Obama because he kept hearing his friends say they would never vote for Hillary. “Also Hillary just isn’t efficient with her resources,” said Miller, who agrees that Obama’s grassroots organizing efforts is a positive sign of his skills as president.
Dyar has always supported Obama and describes the contrast between Obama’s approach as elevating where Clinton’s is increasingly negative.
The couple plan to go to one of the busier primary locations tomorrow, and although they can’t vote they want to be there to encourage people to caucus and answer questions if need be.
After over 100 calls made between them, Miller said it can get discouraging. “You get a lot of hang-ups and wrong numbers. But then every once in awhile you get someone who has a question they need answered, and then it’s really nice.”
