The Bitter-gate comments by Barack Obama are now viral and have become the talk of the Democratic Party’s presidential contest. For Hillary Clinton, this is it.
The. Last. Stand.
Either Clinton or Obama will be politically destroyed by these words and their aftermath. Unlike previous feeding-frenzy moments in this campaign — such as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright blowup, Clinton’s Bosnia tales, the Mark Penn fiasco, and Michelle Obama’s “proud of America” words — this one is going to end either Obama or Clinton’s presidential hopes.
Here’s why: Clinton has gone all in on this one.
Time magazine’s Mark Halperin notes that at every campaign stop, in every press release and conference call, using every surrogate possible, in talking points to every superdelegate, the Clinton campaign is making the case that Obama’s comments are politically fatal. That he’s elitist and out of touch with working-class Americans.
Her take-home point is simple and not subtle: She loves this country and its people, and he does not. This clip, from the Jed Report, captures it succinctly:
It’s a line of argument Democrats know well — having regularly heard it from Republican Party leaders about Democratic presidential candidates in recent years.
That’s the argument Clinton is making, and she’s all in. All in with a Republican argument.
Either Clinton or Obama’s candidacy will be destroyed by this. Or perhaps both will be.
