CARNEGIE- Just outside of Pittsburgh is where you’ll find Carnegie, a smaller city with a population of under 9,000. And today, despite the unusual 80 degree heat, approximately 250 people turned out to listen to four Pittsburgh Steelers players address the crowd with Barack Obama’s message for Change.
Just as former star Franco Harris, who is known for his “immaculate reception” in the 1972 NFL playoffs, was signing an autograph for a fan, I ran into Donna McNamara. She has been a Republican her whole voting life. Until now, that is.
McNamara told me she was born and bred in PA, and for the first time she has switched her registration to the Democratic Party, just for Obama.
“Hillary is a big fat liar,” said McNamara, who said that she was sick of the “status quo.” McNamara called Obama fresh, smart, and consistent. She will be voting for Obama on Tuesday because she said, “if he can do what he wants to do, it will be great.”
Also attending the Steelers Vote For Change event, which was held under the sun in the field of Carnegie elementary school, were college students Kyle Brookins and Deon Summers. Both are first-time voters. Brookins said he did not want another Clinton in office, and Summers said that he liked what Obama was trying to do. Brookins attends Pittsburgh Technical Institute, and Summers attends Community College of Allegheny County, but both said the majority of their friends are supporting Obama.
The event this morning was the “kickoff” to a day filled with multiple stops around Pittsburgh for these former Steelers. The four players, who continue on today around Pittsburgh, were Harris, Edmund Nelson, Robin Cole, and Dwight White.
And as I headed back to the car to continue on to our next destination, I had a feeling that the youth in Pittsburgh are going to turn out in large numbers, just as they have around the rest of the country.
