You’d think that with a primary on his home turf, John Edwards, who retreated to North Carolina after he dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination, would endorse a candidate.
A week ago, Elizabeth Edwards told MSNBC she’d be “surprised” if either her or her husband endorsed Obama or Clinton before the contest. But she quickly left the door open for a change of heart saying, “You never say never.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times is working through every conceivable theory.
They will endorse before the primary. Or after there is a nominee. Or Mr. Edwards will endorse Mr. Obama and Mrs. Edwards will endorse Mrs. Clinton. Or none of the above.
An anonymous aide told the Times that Edwards didn’t want to pick the loser. Although he’s vying for a Democratic cabinet post, he must also know that his endorsement could make a difference, especially if he aggressively campaigns in the next few days. Edward’s friend and adviser John Moylon said he likes both of the candidates and will stay out of it.
“I do not think he is inclined to spend the next three months engaged in the small politics of who’s the better bowler or beer drinker.”
Rumors are circulating that the Edwards’ are leaning more towards Clinton and supporters are hoping his endorsement will bolster her campaign at a crucial time. This is more likely than the last theory, which won’t benefit Edwards at all.
The only hint of an endorsement so far is Elizabeth Edward’s support of Clinton’s universal health-care plan. She told MSNBC, “When asked about a New York Times report suggesting the possibility that she would endorse Clinton and her husband would endorse Obama, she responded, ‘We’re more concerned about whether we’re going to stand in line for Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain next.’”
