Clinton K.O.’d?

Hillary Clinton has likened herself to Rocky - she’s a fighter. She never gives up. She’s even signed boxing gloves for supporters.

But has Barack Obama finally knocked her out?

The numbers from Indiana and North Carolina suggest that yes, he has. Sure, Clinton won Indiana, but earning 51% of the vote to Obama’s 49% is nothing to brag about, especially since Obama won North Carolina by more than 10 points. Clinton needed more - way more - to stay in the game.

I wrote today that 60% of Democrats wanted the see the race between Clinton and Obama go on, according to a recent poll. But there’s a difference between a good race - in which more voters get to have a say, and candidates are forced to work harder and live up to their promises to earn support - and a tired, drawn-out race of desperation that creates divisiveness in the party and makes people start to get, yes, bitter about the whole thing.

There’s also a window of opportunity in which a candidate can bow out gracefully and allow the party to mend from all the mudslinging and focus on November. Clinton has canceled all of her appearances for tomorrow. Hello, window.

She had three potential lifesavers to get her the nomination: double digit victories in Indiana and North Carolina (nope), seating delegates in Michigan and Florida as they’ve already been determined (not likely), or convincing the superdelegates to back her up (also not likely after her lackluster showing tonight).

What will Clinton’s next move be? Do her appearance cancelations indicate that she’s given up, or merely that she needs time to strategize? One would think, as the current underdog, she’d want all the publicity she could get to bolster support for upcoming contests. We can only hope that Wednesday will give us more answers.
