Obama takes the lead (overall)

For as long as the Democratic Party race to the nomination has been going on, Senator Hillary Clinton has maintained a firm grasp on her super-delegate lead.

There was a time when Sen. Clinton had over 100 more super-delegates than Senator Barack Obama. When the delegate lead went to Sen. Obama, along with the popular vote and then the overall number of states (not that it really matters), the Clinton campaign still maintained the super-delegate lead.

According to Politico and ABC News Sen. Obama took over the lead in the number of super-delegates on Friday afternoon.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Friday afternoon seized the superdelegate lead from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), giving him command of every aspect of his party’s presidential nomination race.

That constitutes a key milestone in the race and a shocking reversal of fortune for Clinton.

A “key milestone” is right, because as long as Sen. Clinton maintained her hold on the super-delegates there was a certain legitimacy to her claim that Sen. Obama could not win over the party, but now it seems that has all changed.

Super-delegates aren’t officially tallied anywhere by the Democratic Party so these numbers are just estimates and with their slim margins and it will take another week or two to really see if Sen. Obama has the lead or not as others go for him or for Sen. Clinton.  The best site for tracking the superdelegates is 2008 Democratic Convention Watch.
