Obama omits West Virginia

West Virginia, the Mountain state, is the next on the chopping block in this Democratic primary race. Yet, with only 28 delegates up for grabs and his lead now seemingly apparent according to all of the metrics used, Illinois Senator, Barack Obama seems to have already conceded the state to his opponent, New York Senator, Hillary Clinton.

The primary will take place this Tuesday, yet Newsweek has reported that Sen. Obama is not planning to make a single stop between now and then.

Why is it, then, that Barack Obama has yet to book a single stop in, say, Shepherdstown, Charleston, Philippi, Sutton, Fayetteville, Fairlea or Bluefield–all of which have already hosted either Bill or Hillary Clinton?

Because he has no chance of winning–and no one seems to care.

The long and short of it, is no one does care, the real question is: should they?

On one hand, we know that Sen. Clinton will take the state by a huge margain, possibly the biggest in her campaign, so it makes sense for Sen. Obama to shore up his majority and secure the nomination by campaigning in places that might actually vote for him.

Yet, there is that other hand, where Sen. Obama has all along talked about a “50-state strategy” as his approach to both the General Election and this primary season. Sen. Clinton was heavily criticized all around for her close-minded strategy of only campaigning in the states she “needed” to win and figuring that the rest wouldn’t matter.

I think the current situation of things has made a lot of people rethink that idea of the 50% +1 majority (a la, President Bush and multiple races in both the major parties). So why then does Sen. Obama show this disregard for West Virginia if he is committed to fighting in every state? Is it Elitism? Is West Virginia bitter?

Personally, I think it was a mistake for Sen. Obama to not present at least a token personal campaign in West Virginia, because at the very least if he becomes the nominee he wants to be able to take West Virginia in the fall.
