New math - but not the kind Clinton wants

The necessary number of delegates a candidate needs to clinch the Democratic nomination has changed slightly, from 2,025 to 2,026.

This change in math occurred yesterday, as Democrat Travis Childers won a seat in the House in a special election in Mississippi. And, as Kos points out, he won by 8 points in a very conservative district, despite attacks that associated him with Barack Obama’s Rev. Wright scandal.

Hillary Clinton would like a different kind of “new math” - one that includes seating delegations from Michigan and Florida. If those states were to “count,” the number of delegates needed for the nomination would be 2,209. This is an unlikely outcome, given the fact that nobody can seem to agree on how to fairly seat delegates from the two states, but perhaps it is part of Clinton’s strategy to prolong the race.

According to the Daily Kos front page, Obama currently has 1,885 delegates to Clinton’s 1,717.
