The “appeasement” comments made by President George W. Bush in Knessett Thursday, have generated a foreign policy debate between Senator Obama and Senator McCain today. Obama responded at a Town Hall in South Dakota.
“If George Bush and John McCain want to have a debate about protecting the United States of America, that is a debate that I’m happy to have any time, any place, and that is a debate I will win because George Bush and John McCain have a lot to answer for,” he said.
Until Novembers election, that is what we will hear from Obama; Bush-McCain and McCain-Bush. He is going to link the two together any chance he gets. Obama was on the attack today, he wants to avoid appearing weak on foreign policy. Weakness on foreign policy is one area McCain will try to tear Obama down. Illustrating weakness on foreign policy is a tactic of the Republican Party.
Obama made the decision to come out swinging today. And it helped him. Although the Reverend Wright controversy is a separate issue and unrelated, I think Obama took too long to respond to that. Clearly this is a different issue than Wright, but the point is…gloves need to be on.
How did McCain respond? Well, at a National Rifle Association annual event in Kentucky McCain said:
“It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don’t have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that reality, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment, and determination to keep us safe.”
