On Monday, just days after it issued new rules to address conflicts of interest, the McCain campaign was furiously sifting through the business records of aides and advisers. The new rules were prompted by disclosures that led to the abrupt departure from the campaign of a number of aides who worked as lobbyists, including some with ties to foreign governments.
We’ve all seen the headlines in The New York Times and many other publications, listing the resignation of McCain’s choice to coordinate the RNC as well as the “suspicious” ties to lobbying efforts, especially in foreign governments.
Well, the shoe has hit, McCain is having a hard time sorting out the ins and outs of the ethics policy for disclosing lobbying work. Yet, I personally commend the campaign for taking the issue head on because it is something that needs to be dealt with.
