Results of the RBC meeting so far

The DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) meeting is still in progress today. Michigan and Florida Democrats are being given a chance to plead their delegate cases before the 30-member committee.

Word is that the meeting lasted for about five hours before the participants took a lunch break, and the meeting has recently resumed. Here’s what’s happened so far:

- RBC Co-chairwoman Alexis Herman said seating all delegates from the two states is not an option.
- The chairman of the Michigan Democratic party asked the RBC to divide his state’s delegates between Clinton and Obama, 69-59, and give them full voting rights.
- Florida Democrats admitted that some sort of punishment was appropriate and asked that the RBC seat half of their state’s delegates at the convention.
- Daily Kos reports: “Rumor has it a deal has been struck; MSNBC’s Chuck Todd cites sources for a 69-59 split in Michigan, but with half-votes for each of those delegates.”

A majority of the 30-member committee is necessary to reach a resolution for Michigan and Florida. But even if the RBC decides something today, Hillary Clinton could still fight it. The Carpetbagger Report summarizes a few ways this situation could go down:

The easy way: The RBC meets and tries to reach some kind of accommodation. Clinton gains some delegates, Florida and Michigan get seated, and the nominating fight effectively wraps up over the next several days, with Obama getting the party’s nod. The general election phase of the campaign, assuming it hasn’t already begun, would start before the end of the week.

The hard way: The RBC meets and tries to reach some kind of accommodation, which the Clinton campaign finds unacceptable. They vow to take the issue to the DNC’s Credentials Committee, which meets in Denver on the first day of the party’s national convention. Obama would likely claim he has the nomination later this week, but the Clinton campaign would insist it’s illegitimate, and the nominating fight would continue to drag on through August.

I think Clinton will fight this battle until the convention. The RBC will absolutely not seat the Michigan and Florida delegates how she wants them to be seated. Looks like the drama will continue after all…
