Many analysts I’ve read from today have been mining through reasons Hillary Clinton’s campaign was unraveled. The simplified answer was, Bill is to blame; arguably the most disarming president in recent history (I’m convinced he could charm a mannequin). Bill provided her with the biggest brand name in Democratic politics; household recognition; a party machine.
But for some reason, his continued blunders throughout Clinton’s campaign formed a destructive cycle. He would say something shocking or offensive, Hillary would apologize, and Bill would disappear for a while.
As the Guardian reports: In what may arguable have been the pivotal moment of the campaign, Bill Clinton set off a firestorm that the Clinton organization never really extinguished. On the day of the South Carolina primary, the former president pointedly noted that Jessie Jackson had won the state’s presidential primaries in both 1984 and 1988. Up until that point, Hillary Clinton had still been polling strongly among black voters nationwide. But widespread interpretation of Bill’s remarks as insulting and demeaning towards black voters meant that support evaporated, and Clinton never regained it in any significant numbers.
One of KIRO radio’s guests from Politico this morning said that Clinton was anticipating a coronation, referring to the Clinton dynasty. Earlier this year I wrote about a Clinton speech where she said something along the lines of, “It took a Clinton to clean up after a Bush the first time, it needs to happen again.” It was meant to be charming, rather than to present an allusion of entitlement, but it was damaging nonetheless.
Again, this is just a very distilled answer to “what went wrong.” Somehow a downward spiral happened. The media used to champion Bill Clinton, he was hero-worshipped by his party’s base, and now he is the face of Clinton’s loss. Hillary on the other hand faces debt, defeat and a media (in search of answers) calling her former campaign narcissistic. I think one of the greatest stories of this primary season, would be the Clinton’s recovery, after a hard fall from the public grace.
