Democtratic Issues

The democratic party of the United States is one of the oldest political parties in the world. It has gained popular support from the people and it basically reflects relatively half of the population’s sentiments regarding matters of public concern. The other party is the Republican Party, which also reflects the sentiments of the other half of the population. These two parties have been competing in so many ways in a positive manner in order to create quality policies that would suit the entire nation in general.

But let us take a look at the Democratic Party and its stand on certain issues. Of course both parties have their own stances on different issues. The stances might be different and some might be the same depending on the issue at hand.

Since social issues are the ones that affect the populace the most, let’s examine the Democratic Party’s views regarding some of the social issues. The most glaring social issue is discrimination. The Democratic Party advocates equality for everyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin. It firmly believes that the state has a responsibility to cater to all the concerns of individuals no matter what differences exist among them. However, we can’t completely avoid discrepancies within the party. There will always be those people or members who don’t share the same opinions. On LGBT rights in particular, the party is quite divided. Although its support for same-sex marriage is increasing, some of its members are still against it due to religious and ideological reasons. These discrepancies are but normal since diversity is becoming rampant with the advent of globalization. This only tells us that despite the liberal label associated with the United States, some of its conservative aspects still remain.

Another contentious issue is reproductive rights. The most common cases associated to this are abortion and contraception. The party believes that women should have access to birth control and even abortion methods when necessary. They contend that abortion can be made safe and secure. They also advocate equipping the populace with the right information about responsible sex and the consequences of such activity. However, again, despite the support coming from most of the members of the Democratic Party, some members still don’t find the idea of abortion and sex education palatable. That is why the party is also quite divided to an extent on this matter.
