Republican voters not all on board with McCain

May 13th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Earlier I wrote about the idea that new Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr, who has a reputation for being ultra-conservative in his years as a congressman, could attract Republican voters who aren’t on board with presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.
While McCain has been the presumptive nominee since March 4, when he earned the necessary number […]

McCain’s birthday celebration gone wrong

May 13th, 2008 · 8 Comments

A picture is worth a thousand words, but this photo just says, “Uh-oh.”
It seems that, on August 29, 2005, John McCain and President George W. Bush celebrated McCain’s 69th birthday with a cake photo-op shortly after the President landed at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix. Meanwhile, that same morning, the worst of Hurricane […]

McCain’s choice for the RNC resigns

May 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Shortly after Newsweek reported that:
The campaign recently tapped Doug Goodyear for the job, a veteran operative and Arizonan who was chosen for his “management experience and expertise,” according to McCain press secretary Jill Hazelbaker. But some allies worry that Goodyear’s selection could fuel perceptions that McCain—who has portrayed himself as a crusader against special interests—is […]

May 10th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Cindy McCain has said she will never release her tax returns due to privacy concerns, even while interest mounts because of her husband’s use of the corporate jet.
Howard Dean blasted McCain on the issue though:
“What is John McCain trying to hide?” Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement. “Throughout […]

Editorial cartoonists’ take on the race

May 8th, 2008 · No Comments

I’m obsessed with the number five today. Five days until the West Virginia primary. Time Magazine’s Top-Five Mistakes Clinton made. Five opponents possibly taken down by Obama. Yeah, I’m stretching it, but I thought this would be a great opportunity to make a top-five list of my favorite political cartoons of the presidential race so […]

Will age be a big issue in the general election?

May 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

A story on Politico analyzes how John McCain’s age could become an issue in the general election by looking at how age affected two other campaigns: Ronald Reagan’s 1984 reelection and Bob Dole’s 1996 run against Bill Clinton.
The age issue wasn’t a big deal for Reagan - he won reelection by a landslide - because […]

Economy, presidential candidates, and their affect on local governor’s race

May 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

The AP published an analysis of the governor’s race this month, saying the race could be affected by national trends- namely the 2008 presidential candidates. Gov. Christine Gregoire’s endorsement of Barack Obama might help her attract voters from his demographic.
Gregoire’s somewhat surprising endorsement of Obama shores up cred with party liberals and young people, and […]

Economists explain bad logic of proposed gas tax holiday

May 1st, 2008 · 5 Comments

John McCain recently proposed a “gas tax holiday” - a suspension of the 18.4-cents-per-gallon gas tax during the summer, which is peak driving season. Hillary Clinton has also supported this plan to ease the pain of skyrocketing gas prices. Now economists - and Barack Obama - are saying it’s a bad idea.
Here’s what Princeton economics […]

Sen. John McCain will be coming to town.
Again.
Or at least that’s the scuttlebutt at Politicker WA:
Presidential candidate John McCain (R-Ariz.), the presumptive Republican nominee, is expected to come to Seattle in two weeks for a global warming event in what will be his first visit to the state since the Feb. 9 caucuses when he visited the Seattle Westin on a […]

DNC ad targets McCain’s Iraq stance, irks the RNC

April 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Republican National Committee isn’t happy about this anti-McCain ad:

On Monday, the RNC demanded that NBC, CNN and MSNBC stop airing the DNC-sponsored commercial, saying that it deliberately distorts McCain’s words.
At issue is McCain’s answer, in January, to a question about Bush’s theory that troops could be in Iraq for 50 years.
McCain said: “Maybe 100. […]
